ZEC Drops 30% After Schwartz Says Zcash Holders Safe, But 4-Year Orchard Bug Cannot Be Disproven

Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz said on June 7 that holders of $ZEC will not lose their funds from the recently disclosed Orchard pool vulnerability, provided the bug was never actually exploited. The statement, which addresses a privacy-coin community still processing the May 29 disclosure, came as $ZEC had already fallen more than 30% in a single session to its lowest level in over a month.

The vulnerability, which Zcash's own developers say could have allowed the creation of counterfeit $ZEC for nearly four years, was patched via an emergency NU6.2 hard fork on June 2. According to a post on X by Gareth Jenkinson, "The vulnerability could have been exploited to undetectably create an unlimited amount of counterfeit zcash:native within Orchard. Because of the privacy properties of Orchard,…" The bug resided in the Orchard shielded pool, which was introduced with Network Upgrade 5 (NU5) in May 2022 and built on Halo 2-based zk-SNARKs designed to eliminate the trusted setup requirement of earlier Sapling circuits.

The core challenge for the network is structural rather than technical. Because of the privacy properties of the Orchard pool, Zcash developers cannot cryptographically prove that the exploit was never triggered, as the same architecture that makes $ZEC transactions private also makes supply auditing impossible. Schwartz's reassurance that passive holders who never move their coins are safe is therefore accurate on its own terms but cannot function as a guarantee, with the market pricing unverifiable risk rather than confirmed exploitation.

The Zcash ecosystem is now navigating the gap between a patched vulnerability and an unprovable safety claim, with the NU6.2 hard fork having closed the technical path to further inflation while leaving the historical supply question unresolved.
